About Me.
Meltem Karakuyu (1986, Turkey)
Meltem Karakuyu is a contemporary artist based in the Netherlands. Her practice unfolds through processes of movement, displacement, and transformation, shaped by her transnational trajectory from Turkey to Prague and, most recently, to the Netherlands (2024). She began her academic career in Turkey as a research assistant and later obtained the title of Docent. She holds a PhD in art, and her academic background continues to inform both the conceptual depth and methodological approach of her practice.
These shifts in geography inform a layered visual language that reflects on the accumulation and fragmentation of urban memory. Engaging with the city as both a physical and conceptual construct, Karakuyu’s work examines how histories overlap, erode, and reconfigure over time. Through this lens, she traces the sedimentation of civilizations—where surfaces become archives and forms carry the imprints of past and present simultaneously.
These structural transformations, once articulated through lines and abstract forms, now intersect with the human body—particularly the female body—as a site for reflecting on identity, visibility, and agency. In her paintings, the female figure emerges as both resilient and organic, reclaiming space within a world where social and posthuman conditions often impose forms of invisibility. Nature is intricately intertwined with these figures, evoking the transformative forces of growth and regeneration. Drawing on and reinterpreting visual approaches associated with John Everett Millais and Henri Rousseau, Karakuyu merges figurative representation with stylized botanical forms, creating a dialogue between human presence, natural environments, and the evolving structures of contemporary life.
Alongside her artistic practice, she leads private lessons and workshops for young artists, fostering creativity while maintaining a strong academic foundation. Her work continues to engage with themes of self-identity, perception, and transformation, positioning the human figure as both observer and participant within a constantly shifting world.
