PRINTMAKING
Meltem Karakuyu
Stories in Line and Memory
My printmaking practice begins with a line. Through traditional printmaking techniques, I explore how lines, textures, and tonal contrasts can create atmosphere and depth on the surface. In this work, architectural forms and landscapes appear simplified and slightly distorted, shaped by dynamic marks and dark tonal areas. These elements do not only describe a place; they suggest a memory of it. The image moves between representation and abstraction, allowing the viewer to experience both structure and emotion within the composition.
My visual language is also influenced by the architectural heritage of Anatolian civilizations. Historical constructions and traditional buildings inspire the forms and spatial organization in my prints. Their strong structures and layered histories become part of the narrative within the image. Through gestural drawing, bold linear forms, and textured surfaces, I try to capture not the exact appearance of a place but the emotional impression it leaves behind.
Alongside these architectural and spatial explorations, the human figure also plays an important role in my practice. My figurative prints continue this storytelling approach, using expressive lines and tonal contrasts to explore presence, identity, and personal experience. Whether through landscapes, buildings, or figures, my printmaking becomes a way of telling visual stories shaped by memory, place, and observation.
